Description

This is the 2nd in the American Contract Bridge League's series of bridge books for beginning and advancing players. Successfully used by students and teachers for over 20 years, this edition has been updated to reflect current standards for playing bridge. This book concentrates on the play of the hand (making a plan, promoting winners, finessing, trumping losers, etc.). The initial bidding concepts are reviewed and Jacoby transfers and slam bidding are introduced.

5For beginners as well as experienced players  Mar 29, 2009 By Simscook "Simscook"
I purchsed this book during my quest for building up my skills and after reading some of the reviews. I have played bridge for over 30 years and recently felt I was getting stagnant in my play of the hand. I have several bridge books for reference, but when I read them to try to build up my skills, I was usually dissatisfied. Often the author did not fully explain why certain rules were successful. Audry Grant's system is easy to learn, goes into detail as to why a rule is suggested and gives worthwhile quizes at the end of each chapter. Even though some of the information is a review for me, I did not find that it was too basic - I enjoy refreshing my concepts and always learn something new. I will admit that some of her point count guidelines are a point or two off from the way I usually play, so I am getting used to her system in that respect. The last time I played bridge I used some of my "new Knowedge" and it worked well!

5great for beginners!!  Jun 20, 2010 By L. Nicholas "AmazonQueen"
We bought this book for a newly formed bridge club - we have two veteran players, two beginners, and two novice-intermediate players. This book has been great to get the beginners up to speed quickly and to be able to engage in basic play with all members of our little club. We bought her companion "cheat sheet" as well (bridge at a glance), which helps in the heat of play if we've forgotten something. It has given us the basics for all of our players to improve their play and learn more advanced skills.

5Best ever for intermediates  Sep 01, 2009 By P. Jordan
I own a copy of an earlier edition, which I consider to be the best ever published for intermediate players up to that time. It covers not only the play of the hand by the declarer, but important aspects of bidding and of play by defenders. The presentation is the clearest ever, aided profusely by excellent examples.

5play bridge  Sep 17, 2010 By notrump
This book has changed the way I play bridge. I am now making extra tricks. She presents the basics clearly. Advanced players may not find this as useful as I am.

5Play of the Hand in the 21st Century: The Diamond Series (Acbl Bridge) (Purchased on 02/09/2011)  Mar 13, 2011 By lucille
I needed a review of the bidding count, and how to play. I discovered that I remembered how to play, but I did need a review of the bidding. A very good source.
Simple and concise.
